Five House Plan Considerations

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 580

As is often the case, people excited by the prospect of having a new house built for them, grab a house plan that they seem to enjoy and end up unhappy with the result.  It's a terribly unfortunate event to be unsure of your brand new house, simply because you didn't consider some basic things when choosing your house plan to begin with.  What follows is the top five considerations for house plans.

1.  The first thing that you should consider when choosing a house plan is its overall style and feeling.  Remember that the house you end up building will be your home for the coming years and so the style of the house needs to reflect your personality and lifestyle.  Don't just choose a house plan because its there and looks neat, your considering a long term investment so it "pays" to make sure that what your choosing is right for you.

2.  Another important aspect of the house plan that you choose is the overall layout of the house.  This is very important because it will depend on what your uses for the house are.  By that, I mean if you entertain often then you should make sure that the layout reflects that.  For example, your kitchen should have easy access to the common room if you often have people over and need to move back and forth to deliver food.

3.  In addition, you should decide early on if you'd like a single level house or a multi-level house.  This will impact the layout and style of the house, as mentioned above, as well as the accessibility.  Also, this will depend on the size of property that you have.  If you only have a small property then you should consider a multi-level home so that you can save some of your yard to enjoy.

4.  Also, make sure that you decide how many rooms you wish to have in your new home and, more specifically, what rooms you wish to have.  A recent trend lately seems to be to have an entire room dedicated to laundry facilities.  Make sure that you keep in mind the previous things that we've talked about since if you do decide to add a laundry room you should make sure that it is easily accessible from wherever the laundry will reside.

5.  Lastly, make sure that you consider the style and layout of the kitchen.  For some reason, the kitchen seems to be the room that most people gather in and is certainly the room that people spend most of their time in so make sure that you feel comfortable there.  It is also the area of the house that is most used since everyone needs to eat, so make sure that the kitchen is functionally suitable to you and your lifestyle.

Just remember that there are a lot of things to think about when choosing a house plan and that you need to make sure that you think about every aspect of your new home.  This is a long-term commitment, remember, so make sure that you're happy from the start.
